How Claude watermarks work
In August 2026, Anthropic documented how Claude marks AI-generated content for transparency (including EU AI Act commitments). There are two complementary systems: embedded text watermarks and signed file provenance.
1. Embedded watermarks in text
When a supported Claude model generates text, it weaves an imperceptible watermark into the text itself. You won’t see it, and Anthropic says it shouldn’t change meaning, quality, or readability.
Because the mark is part of the text, it can travel with copy/paste and may persist through some editing. It is applied at the model level, so it can appear across Claude surfaces (app, API, Claude Code, and more) where marking is supported.
2. Signed provenance metadata on files
For supported files such as PNG, JPG, and SVG, Claude can attach signed provenance metadata using the C2PA open standard. That label can signal a file was processed by Claude and help detect tampering.

What detection means
Anthropic says a detected mark indicates content may have been processed by Claude — not full proof of authorship or that Claude was the original source of ideas. Short, heavily edited, translated, or pre-marking model outputs may not carry a reliable signal.
Why people want a Claude watermark remover
Writers, builders, and teams want reusable copy without an invisible statistical signature traveling forever. The practical approach for text is rewrite/paraphrase tooling — which is what claudewatermarkremover.app focuses on.
