Claude watermarks on essays: what this tool does (and doesn’t)
If you drafted with Claude and are staring at a submission portal, you probably want a straight answer. This page is that answer: what the checker actually inspects, what paid rewrite changes, and what we will not claim about school integrity tools.
What the tool does
- Check (free, in-browser): flags HTML class names containing “claude”, zero-width characters, and exotic/nbsp spaces. Em dashes and curly quotes are stylistic, not proof. Walkthrough: check Claude text.
- Clean traces (free, in-browser): strips those inspectable leftovers. It does not paraphrase your essay.
- Rewrite / Remove watermark (credits): paraphrases with a non-Claude model. 1 credit = 500 words. The goal is to disrupt the statistical mark in token choice, not to “beat Turnitin.”
Checking never leaves your browser. Rewrite hits the neutralize API, then is discarded — not stored as a permanent archive. See clean vs rewrite.
What the tool does not do
- It does not run Anthropic’s watermark detector. That public product does not exist yet.
- It does not guarantee a low GPTZero or Turnitin AI score. Those classifiers measure a different signal.
- It does not make submitting uncredited AI work allowed. Honor codes and disclosure rules are yours to follow.
- It does not strip C2PA file provenance from images.
A realistic workflow for a draft
- Decide whether you are allowed to use AI on this assignment.
- If you are turning Claude notes into your own writing, rewrite in your voice first — the statistical mark lives in Claude’s wording.
- Paste into the checker so artifact HTML and invisible characters are not still sitting in the file.
- If you use paid rewrite, skim facts, citations, and quotes. A paraphraser can scramble a source you meant to keep verbatim.
- Cite AI assistance if your course requires it. Neutralizing a mark is not the same as honest disclosure.
Credits, if you rewrite
1 credit covers 500 words. Credits never expire. Failed jobs are not charged. Pack sizes live on pricing; the mechanics are on rewrite credits explained.
FAQ
Will this make my essay undetectable?
No. The free checker strips inspectable traces. Paid rewrite paraphrases with a non-Claude model. Neither is a guarantee against school detectors, honor codes, or a future Anthropic verifier.
Does Turnitin see Claude watermarks?
Turnitin estimates AI-like writing. That is not Anthropic’s watermark. See the GPTZero / Turnitin guide for the split.
Is the checker free for class papers?
Yes. Checking and cleaning run in your browser with no account. Rewrite uses credits (1 credit = 500 words). Credits never expire; failed jobs are not charged.
